Juha Korpela about Modelling the Mesh
At the Data Warehousing & BI Summit, that took place on March 24rd in Utrecht, Juha Korpela presented his session Modeling the Mesh: understanding data products and domains. Data Mesh is a framework for federated data management and governance that gets a lot of attention from large organizations around the world facing problems with bottlenecked data teams and sprawling solution spaces.
While the core principles of Data Mesh are well established in the literature, and practical implementation stories have started to emerge giving meat to the theoretical bones, some questions remain. One of the biggest challenges is managing business context across multiple domains and data products. In this interview with BI-Platform, Juha Korpela explains what the most overlooked prerequisite is for defining meaningful data domains, the importance of modelling maturity, what approach should an organization take to balance the tension between federated governance and local decision-making speed and how organizations should measure whether their data products are actually delivering value.
